A Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar from its hiding place. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. The total had to be absolutely exact. Then carefully placing all the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to a pharmacy. (药房) She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. So she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

"And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I am talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven"t seen in ages," he followed. “Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick… and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.

“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”

The pharmacist’ brother bent down and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “Mommy says he needs an operation.

But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered. “And it’s all the money I have.” “Well, what a coincidence. A dollar and eleven cents-- the exact price of a miracle for little brother,” smiled the man. “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

The pharmacist’s brother, Dr. Carlton Armstrong, was expert in neurosurgery( 神经外科 ). The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again and doing well.

Mum and Dad happily talked about the chain of events that had led them to the place. “That surgery,” her mum whispered, “was a miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost.”

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost…..one dollar and eleven cents…plus the faith of a little child. 41.Tess took her money to the pharmacy to ______________.

It was not yet eleven o"clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had

obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing- place searching in his pockets for money, the boatman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger"s figure. He was a young man of barely eighteen years, evidently country bred, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town.

He was wearing a rough grey coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular(强健的) legs;his stockings of blue yarn(纱线)

must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had

sheltered the greyer head of the young man’s father. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature"s gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment(装饰). The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little city of a New England colony(殖民地). 49. What time of the year was it in the story?

  A. Spring.

  B. Summer.

 C. Fall

 D. Winter 50.The boatman was willing to take Robin across the river because_______________.

  C. He was going to row across the river anyway

  D. He felt sorry for him because Robin looked poor 51.The stockings that Robin wore were obviously___________.

  A. well worn

  B. very expensive

 C. handmade

 D. much too big

52.What do we learn about Robin’s mood?

  A. Sad

 B. Happy

 C. Tired

 D. Curious

D It was the summer of 1936. The Olympic Games were being held in Berlin. I wasn"t too worried about all this. I"d trained, sweated and disciplined myself for six years, with the Games in mind. While I was on my way there, all I could think about was taking home one or two of those gold medals. I had my eyes especially on the long jump. A year before, as a university student,

I"d set the world"s record of 8.13 meters. Everyone expected me to win that Olympic event. But when the time came for the long jump trials, I fouled(犯规)

in the first two of my three qualifying jumps. “Did I come all the way from America for this?’” I thought bitterly. “ To foul out of the trials and make a fool of myself?” Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to look into the friendly blue eyes of the tall German long jumper, who had easily qualified for the finals on his first attempt. He offered me a firm handshake. "Jesse Owens, I"m Luz Long. I don"t think we"ve met."

"Glad to meet you," I said. Then, trying to hide my nervousness, I added, "How are you?" "I"m fine. The question is: How are you?" "What do you mean?" I asked. "Something must be eating you, you should be able to qualify with your eyes closed." "Believe me, I know it," I told him--and it felt good to say that to someone.

For the next few minutes we talked together. I didn"t tell Long what was "eating" me, but he seemed to understand my anger, and he did his best to reassure me. Finally, seeing that I had calmed down somewhat, he pointed to the take-off board and asked me to draw a line a few inches at the back of the board and aim at making my take-off from there. Confidently, I did so and qualified with almost a foot to spare. That night I walked over to Luz Long"s room and thanked him. We sat and talked for two hours. When I finally got up to leave, we both knew that a real friendship had been formed. Luz would go out to the field the next day trying to beat me if he could. But I knew that he wanted me to do my best--even if that meant my winning. As it turned out, Luz broke his own past record. In doing so, he pushed me on to a peak performance. I remember that at the instant I landed from my final jump--the one which set the Olympic record of 8.06 meters -he was at my side, congratulating me. I realized then that Luz was just what Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Games, must have had in his mind when he said, "The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well." 53. Before the Olympic Games in Berlin, the writer ___________________.

 A. had trained seriously for six years since 1936

 B. had taken home one or two Olympic gold medals

 C. was the holder of the world record in long jump

 D. had broken the Olympic record in long jump 54. What did Luz Long mean by saying “something must be eating you?”

 A. It was a shame for the writer to have fouled twice

 B. The writer had made a fool of himself

  C. It was possible that the writer can qualify with eyes closed

 D. The writer was too much worried when jumped 55. How did Luz Long feel when the writer set the Olympic record at last?

 A. Disappointed

  B. Ashamed

 C. Satisfied

 D. Unhappy 56. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. My Olympic Gold Medal

  B. My True Friend—Luz Long

 C. My Greatest Olympic Prize

  D. My New Record in the Olympics

E In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. Some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others end in tears. Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts or at least the thoughts they type are what really counts. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star. Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so

many people come together to chat? Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to know how intelligent they are first. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them. Internet users can carefully choose their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” (不用语言表达的)communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks.” This surely leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different from the real person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll, “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.” 57. Which would the critics of online relationships most probably disagree to?

 A. Nobody can truly know another person in cyberspace.

  B. Internet users can choose their words to create any image they want to give.

  C. The Internet allows couples to know how intelligent they are.

  D. In a sense, Internet users are not really themselves. 58. Even the shyest person can become a chat-room star because what really counts is a person’s_____________.

  A. nonverbal communication

 B. identity shown in the chat

  C. knowledge and appearance

  D. thoughts typed on the screen 59. The underlined word “This” (Paragraph6) refers to _______.

 A. having exciting conversations online

  B. forming personal relationship in cyberspace

  C. imagining online friends with so many unknowns

 D. knowing a person in a love relationship 60. What is the writer’s attitude towards finding love in cyberspace?

  A. Interested

  B. Disinterested

 C. Positive

 D. Negative

  第二节:sarah 信箱是某报的专栏。刊载读者提出的各种问题与栏目主持人 的解答。第 61至 65 题是 5 位读者的来信。阅读下列 的回复(A.B.C.D.E

 F ),为每封来信选择最合适的回复,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

 61. Dear Sarah,

I’m 16 and I have a friend who may be in serious trouble. She eats too little, and sometimes she does not eat, because she fears becoming fat. We’ve known each other for about four or five years. Nobody ever told me what to do in this sort of situation, and I’m concerned. I want to help, but don’t know how.

 Trying

 62. Dear Sarah,

I have a friend who has borrowed money from me but seems to have forgotten about it. I feel uncomfortable bringing it up, especially when I’ve already done so several times before. How

can I remind her that she owes me money?

 Lender

 63. Dear Sarah, I’m 17 years old and headed for college soon. Yet my mother persists in speaking to me in baby talk. I’ve begged her to stop, but she says she has got used to the baby talk, and I have to live with it. What can I do?

 No Baby

  64. Dear Sarah, I have a friend who wants me to do everything with her. She’ll call me to see if I’m busy. If I’m not, she’ll shout, “ Pack your backs! We’re going camping!” She’ll ask me to take pictures with my cell phone so she can see where I am. I’d like to keep her as a friend, but she makes me feel nervous. What can I tell her?

 Enough Already

  65. Dear Sarah,

My mother has been looking into my stuff—checking my mobile phone messages and reading my diary. Even when I was really in school, she would suspect I was somewhere else. I tried talking to her, telling her that I am not guilty of all the things she’s suspecting me of. Still, she does not believe me.

 Suspect

 A

 Dear××,

Keep it simple. Next time you’re with your friend. Hold out your hand, palm up. Pinch your fingers together three times, as if expecting that hand to become instantly covered in fresh bills. Give 48 hours. If the money doesn’t appear, you have the unhappy choice of writing off the loan or writing off the friend.

  Sarah

 B Dear××,

I urge you to take immediate action: get her involved in an activity in which she’ll meet people who share her interests. Though her difficulties may be painful for you to watch, don’t let her see you sweat. Tell her you believe in her. Show her she is big in your eyes.

 Sarah

C Dear××, Your friend needs more friends. You can’t possibly provide all the attention she needs. Stop doing all the stuff that feels wrong. Gently guide her into clubs, sports, any activities that she enjoys and will widen her circle. If she’s a true friend, she’ll be able to take the change.

 Sarah

D Dear××, It’s great you’re paying attention to your friend. Without showing alarm, try to see how she feels about her weight and dieting. And if she seems to have problems, please turn your concerns over to a parent, a teacher or another adult you trust. Responsible adults know where to take your friend for help.

  Sarah

E Dear××, There is no need to feel too sad. Perhaps your mum just wants to connect with you but is doing it all wrong. Tell her you want her to trust you as much as you would like to trust her. If you don’t think you can talk to her, writer a letter or jot down your thoughts with the words “ About my mother” and leave it lying around ---- she’s bound to read it.

 Sarah

F Dear××, Aw, give Mum a break. She’s about to lose you to the big bad world. As long as she doesn’t expect you to sit on her lap or talk to her like a baby, you’re good to go. Tell her you love her. And ask her to please try to control the baby talk when she visits the dorm or when you are with friends.

 Zhang Yalin is a volunteer.

The reasons for her doing so are as follows. First of all, it’s a good virtue to help others. She was once helped by others so she wants to do something useful in return. Secondly, by helping others she will gain valuable experience and build up her confidence. What’s more, volunteering makes her life more colorful and meaningful.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s the volunteers who make the world more beautiful. So I’d like to be one of them to help others and I hope I can improve myself through serving others.
